Application Process

The mission of Leader Dogs for the Blind is to empower people who are blind or visually impaired with lifelong skills for independent travel. We want to support you in this endeavor. As a result, we have a thorough application process in place to ensure we are available to assist those who need it most. Application Overview The application process, which typically takes 30 to 60 days, consists of a written application, including character references and medical information. A short video demonstrating the applicant’s independent travel skills within his or her home area is also required. Once approved for a program, assignment to a class usually takes an additional 30 to 90 days.

If an applicant is denied training, he or she will receive a written explanation of the reason(s). In most cases, an applicant is denied because he or she has not met a basic requirement or due to advice from a medical professional or counselor. We will not approve an applicant when training is not in the applicant’s best interest.
