Programs for the Blind and Visually Impaired
Leader Dogs for the Blind programs enhance a person’s independence and quality of life.
Each year over 235 people from all over the world come to Leader Dog to receive training in our dog guide program – a life changing event that pairs students with a dog guide, opening doors to independence, safety and self-worth.
We also offer training in orientation and mobility and Trekker and Trekker Breeze GPS systems.
For people who are deaf and blind, Leader Dog offers a Deaf-blind dog guide program that teaches students to utilize sign language and touch to communicate commands and praise to their dog. This is the only dedicated program of its kind in the United States.
Cost of Leader Dog Programs
All Leader Dog programs are offered free-of-charge at our residential campus in Rochester Hills, Michigan, including:
- expenses for public transportation to students traveling within North America
- room and board
- equipment costs (with the exception of the Trekker GPS unit)
Student participating in Trekker training are required to purchase their Trekker unit.
