Common Leader Dog Commands

While a Leader Dog may guide a person who is blind or visually impaired, the Leader Dog handler is still in charge of directing the dog. The following are commands a handler may give to his or her dog.

  • Sit
  • Down (lay down)
  • Stay
  • Come
  • Around (Leader Dogs usually walk on the left side of the handler. The command “around” tells the dog to move to the right side.)
  • Forward (start walking)
  • Right (turn right)
  • Left (turn left)
  • Hup-up (hurry)
  • Steady (slow down)
  • Straight
  • Find the... (tells the dog to find objects such as the door, chair or curb)
  • Leave it
  • Follow (tells the dog to follow a person)
